Shape Sifter is a stand-alone utility which helps you identify associations of shapefiles and ArcView GIS projects.

Shape Sifter creates a catalog of all shapefiles and ArcView GIS projects in those directories.  You may then click on either a shapefile or a project to determine all associations with that file.
